Tackling Sacroiliac and Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction *New*
This 1-day in-person course provides an excellent foundation for understanding, effectively diagnosing and treating people with sacroiliac dysfunction and pelvic girdle pain. Literature is reviewed and an evidenced based approached is emphasized. Topics include anatomy and biomechanics, diagnosis including special tests literature review, current recommendations, pregnancy and postpartum considerations and interventions. The Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method ℠ (PGM Method℠), developed by Deborah Riczo, is presented and evidence to support this simplified yet comprehensive approach is reviewed and practiced with dedicated lab time. Specific self-pelvic balancing exercises are introduced and practiced, and patient handouts are included. Course consists of lecture, lab practice, group discussion, and video (including specific patient video) and is interactive in nature. You will develop quick screening tools that are clinically applicable and a simplified treatment approach for sacroiliac/pelvic girdle dysfunction that can be readily used “on Monday morning” after the course.

About Dr. Riczo
Deborah Riczo, PT, DPT, MEd authored “Sacroiliac Pain, Understanding the Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method” in 2018, publisher OPTP, Minn. She is the president of Riczo Health Education, which focuses on continuing education and health education. She developed the “Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method SM and has been teaching continuing education courses on this subject since 2011. She presented at APTA’s CSM New Orleans conference in 2018 on sacroiliac and pelvic girdle dysfunction which was well received and attended. She is scheduled to speak on this topic for the Ohio Annual Conference 2019. She has been a practicing physical therapist for over 35 years, most of which has been spent in clinical practice at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, OH. In addition she served as adjunct faculty at Cleveland State University (CSU) DPT program and is the guest speaker for the CSU DPT sacroiliac dysfunction section. Her areas of specialty and practice include sacroiliac dysfunction, industrial rehabilitation and women’s health including breast cancer, lymphedema, prenatal/postpartum issues and pelvic floor dysfunction. Deborah has been an active member of the APTA for over 35 years, held numerous positions including serving as an Ohio Delegate to the APTA House of Delegates and recently elected as Director for the Ohio Physical Therapy Association in 2018.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to perform the following:
1. Appreciate the musculoskeletal anatomy and biomechanics of the pelvic girdle and what structures are commonly involved in dysfunction.
2. Identify and palpate externally key bony landmarks, muscles and ligaments of the pelvic girdle that commonly are involved in sacroiliac dysfunction.
3. Discuss the current evidence supporting the use of movement based and static symmetry special tests for diagnosing sacroiliac dysfunction
4. Identify the current recommended special tests for sacroiliac dysfunction
5. Demonstrate confidence at performing a cluster of four special tests used in the Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method ℠ (PGM Method℠)
6. Demonstrate confidence in instructing specific self-corrective exercises used in the PGM Method℠
Pre-Requisites & Requirements
Open to: Licensed Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, 3rd Year Physical Therapist Students.
Attendance: Participants are expected to stay through the entire course; please make your travel plans accordingly. Deduction of contact hours hours and ineligibility to participate in the CAPP process (for those attending CAPP courses) will occur for participants who leave the course early.
Lab Participation: Participants will be working in groups of 2-3 during labs. All participants will participate in labs as both “clinician” and “patient.” These labs are appropriate for all participants to fully participate, including pregnant, post-partum and male participants. All participants will be required to complete the External Consent & Release Form.pdf (click to view). All participants must wear lab appropriate attire under their clothes/gym pants as lab is interspersed throughout the course days. Pregnant registrants are encouraged to participate in labs and opt out of activities as desired. Lab clothes should be 2 piece swim suit or shorts/sports bra.
Pre-Reading Assignments: Pre-readings are articles and cases that must be read and reviewed prior to Day 1 of the course. Pre-readings will be provided electronically to course participants prior to the course.
English Language Proficiency: If you are a foreign-educated physical therapist/assistant, you will need to pass the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) and meet the score requirements. There are some exemptions to the TOEFL requirement for individuals who are exempt under the USCIS regulations. TOEFL scores must be reported directly to SoWH for the purposes of determining eligibility for course attendance. The minimum TOEFL scores we require are the following: Reading: 21; Listening: 18; Writing: 24; Speaking: 26.
